What is CGPI? Full Form, Meaning & Conversion

Cumulative Grade Performance Index (CGPI) is the credit-weighted grading standard applied across universities such as Mumbai University and premier engineering institutes. Learn how it is determined and converted to percentage.

Quick Summary: What Does CGPI Stand For?

Cumulative Grade Performance Index

CGPI is identical in calculation logic to CGPA, functioning as the 10-point cumulative grading metric for Mumbai University and select technical universities.

1. Meaning and Full Form of CGPI

CGPI stands for Cumulative Grade Performance Index. While most Indian universities refer to overall academic standing as CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), institutions like the University of Mumbai and select National Institutes of Technology (NITs) use the nomenclature CGPI for their Credit Based Semester and Grading System (CBSGS / CBCS).

Similarly, single-semester performance in these universities is denoted as SGPI (Semester Grade Performance Index) rather than SGPA.

2. How CGPI is Calculated

CGPI is calculated by weighting the grade performance index of each semester by the total credits assigned to that semester:

CGPI = Σ(SGPI_i × Credits_i) / Σ(Credits_i)

3. Converting CGPI to Percentage

For students of Mumbai University, the official circular specifies:

  • For CGPI ≥ 7.00: Percentage (%) = (CGPI × 7.1) + 11
  • For CGPI < 7.00: Percentage (%) = (CGPI × 7.2) + 12

For other universities using CGPI without a custom circular, the AICTE guideline Percentage = (CGPI - 0.75) × 10 or direct multiplier CGPI × 10 applies.
