How to Calculate Overall CGPA

The Golden Rule for Overall CGPA
Do not simply take the simple average of your SGPAs unless every semester had an identical number of credits!
1. The Two Methods of Calculating Overall CGPA
Depending on whether all semesters carry equal academic weight, universities apply one of two methods:
Method A: Credit-Weighted Method (Official UGC & AICTE Standard)
In technical and professional degrees (B.Tech, B.E., M.Tech, MBBS), earlier semesters often have 20–24 credits while final semesters have 16–18 credits due to project work. The true cumulative CGPA is calculated as:
Method B: Arithmetic Mean (When Credits are Equal)
If every single semester in your course carries exactly the same total credits (e.g. exactly 20 credits per semester), your overall CGPA simplifies to:
